Synergetic Organization in Speech Rhythm

چکیده
The Speech Cycling Task (SCT) is a novel experimental paradigm developed together with Robert Port and Keiichi Tajima at Indiana University. In a SCT, subjects repeat a phrase containing multiple prominent, or stressed, syllables in time with an external timer, which can be simple or complex. A phase-based collective variable is deened in the acoustic signal. This paper reports on two experiments using the SCT which together reveal many of the hallmarks of hierarchically coupled oscillatory processes. The rst experiment requires subjects to place the nal stressed syllable of a small phrase at speciied phases within the overall Phrase Repetition Cycle (PRC). It is clearly demonstrated that only three patterns, characterized by phases around 1 3 , 1 2 or 2 3 are reliably produced, and these points are attractors for other target phases. The system is thus multistable, and the attractors correspond to stable couplings between the metrical foot and the PRC. A second experiment examines the behavior of these attractors at increased rates. Faster rates lead to mode jumps between attractors. Previous experiments have also illustrated hysteresis as the system moves from one mode to the next. The dynamical organization is particularly interesting from a modeling point of view, as there is no single part of the speech production system which cycles at the level of either the metrical foot or the phrase repetition cycle. That is, there is no continuous kinematic observable in the system. Nonetheless, there is strong evidence that the macroscopic behavior of the entire production system is correctly described as hierarchically coupled oscillators. There are many parallels between this organization and the forms of inter-limb coupling observed in locomotion and rhythmic manual tasks.

Produced Speech Rhythm Depends on Predictability of Stress Patterns
If speakers repeat a phrase, their speech tends to be highly rhythmical. In a similar task without repetition, no such rhythmicity was found. This study investigates whether stress predictability, varied between tasks, affects speech rhythm. Results show that a regular speech rhythm emerges in repeated phrases (with highly predictable stress pattern), but not in other tasks without repetition (...
متن کاملThe Role of Rhythm in Speech and Language Rehabilitation: The SEP Hypothesis
For thousands of years, human beings have engaged in rhythmic activities such as drumming, dancing, and singing. Rhythm can be a powerful medium to stimulate communication and social interactions, due to the strong sensorimotor coupling. For example, the mere presence of an underlying beat or pulse can result in spontaneous motor responses such as hand clapping, foot stepping, and rhythmic voca...

THIS FUNCTIONAL MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING STUDY EXAMINES SHARED AND DISTINCT CORTICAL AREAS INVOLVED IN THE AUDITORY PERCEPTION OF SONG AND SPEECH AT THE LEVEL OF THEIR UNDERLYING CONSTITUENTS: words and pitch patterns. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to isolate the neural correlates of the word- and pitch-based discrimination between song and speech, corrected for rhythmic...
متن کاملWhat dysarthrias can tell us about the neural control of speech
Dysarthrias, part of the class of neurogenic speech disorders, provide several sources of evidence concerning the neural control of speech. Although the dysarthrias have been studied primarily from a clinical perspective directed to issues of assessment and management, they have much to tell us about how the brain regulates the act of speaking. This paper considers "ve major areas in which diso...
متن کاملFinite Time Terminal Synergetic Controller for Nonlinear Helicopter Model
In this paper, an almost new control approach called terminal synergetic control which works based on user defined manifold is applied to a nonlinear helicopter model. Stability analysis is convestigated using Lyapunov stability theory. Synergetic controller is applied to this nonlinear fifth-order helicopter model to control height and angle. Simulation results showed that it has faster and sm...
